6 Golden Rules To Take Care of Your Eyes

Any damage to our eyes not just affects our sight but also impacts our quality of life. So, how do we take care of our eyes? At Sharp Sight (Group of Eye Hospitals), we recommend everyone, especially elderly people to get regular eye examinations. Also, after 40 years, its important to know your family history of eye diseases such as Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, etc., and inform your eye surgeon about it.


Don’t take your eyes for granted. And, if you still want to know how to care for your eyes, follow these easy steps on regular basis:


#1. Eat Well

Its a universal fact that good health (including eye health) starts with healthy food. So, eat foods that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and Vitamin C and E, etc. These foods help to ward off age-related vision problems like Cataract, Macular Degeneration, etc. Foods such as green leafy vegetables (spinach, kale, etc.), Salmon, tuna, eggs, nuts, beans, tofu, oranges and other citrus fruits or juices are great options to maintain good sight.


#2. Quit Smoking


Smoking makes you more likely to get cataract and optic nerve damage, among many other medical problems. Therefore, its advisable to quit smoking and lead a healthy lifestyle.


#3. Wear UV Protected Sunglasses

Make sure to wear sunglasses everytime you step out in the sun as the right pair of sunglasses will  protect you from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Too much UV exposure boosts your chances of Cataract and Macular Degeneration. Therefore, choose a pair of sunglasses that blocks UVA and UVB rays.


#4. Safety Eyewear

Wear safety glasses, helmets or protective goggles while swimming or playing other outdoor games. It’s important to shield your eyes with protective layer so as to keep them safe.

Staring at a computer or phone screen for too long can cause severe eye problems such as digital eyestrain, blurry vision, trouble focusing at a distance, dry eyes, constant headache, neck, back and shoulder pain, etc.  Also, every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Everyone needs a regular eye exam, even young children. It helps protect your sight and lets you see your best. In case you face any eye related problem, do not delay and see your ophthalmologist on time as many a times even eye exams can help diagnose diseases, like glaucoma that usually shows no prior symptoms.


How To Protect Your Eyes:

  • Make sure your glasses or contacts prescription is up to date.
  • If you are facing problem of digital eyestrain don’t take it for granted and visit your eye doctor for instant relief.
  • Follow correct posture while working on computer screen.
  • Choose a comfortable, supportive chair. Position it in a way so that your feet are flat on the floor.
  • If your eyes are dry, blink more or use moisturising eye drops but only in consultation with your doctor.
  • Rest your eyes every 20 minutes. Look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Get up at least every 2 hours and take a 15-minute break.
