Ask The Expert: Dr Anurag Wahi on LASIK Eye Surgery and Laser Vision Correction

What is LASIK? LASIK is a surgical procedure to correct your eye power with the help of laser, a beam of light, to gently reshape the cornea, the surface of the eye, to improve vision. Post surgery you can see without glasses.

What is the ideal age for LASIK Surgery?

Anyone who is 18 years or older with the stable vision is an ideal candidate for LASIK.

What are the various types of LASIK Surgery?

At Sharp Sight (Group of Eye Hospitals), one of the best eye hospitals in Delhi NCR we offer two types of LASIK surgeries. First and the latest one is called Femtosecond LASIK- this is a Bladeless LASIK and another is the normal LASIK. In normal procedure we use microkeratome blade to make a corneal flap whereas in Femtosecond LASIK the whole procedure is done through laser.

What are the advantages of Femtosecond LASIK laser surgery?

The biggest advantage of Femtosecond laser is that we can even perform surgery with thinner flaps. Needless to say, it is the most advanced, most safe and most precise technology!

What about precautions? Is it the same in both the procedures of LASIK or do they differ?

Precautions are same in both the procedures – be it Femtosecond or normal surgery. First precaution is that post surgery the patient should go home and take rest for atleast 5-6 hours. A few of you might see things little foggy or cloudy for a day or two but do not panic as that’s normal! By almost a week your vision becomes crystal clear.

How soon after LASIK can I resume normal activities/work?

You can get back to your normal routine of work from second or third day onwards, depending upon the nature of your work. In case your work is to be done on laptop or PCs then from third day onwards you may resume your work. But as your eyes will be sensitive to light and tire easily for at least a couple of days, I would advice you to work briefly for a few days and give enough rest to your eyes.

When may I go back to wearing makeup?

You may resume wearing makeup about one week after your surgery. However, throw out your old makeup and buy new to decrease your risk of infection.

Is any lens implanted in my eyes during LASIK?

There’s no lens that has to be implanted in or during LASIK surgery. Its only laser which is correcting your power.

How long does LASIK surgery take?

The laser treatment itself usually takes less than a minute, while the entire procedure takes approximately 5 minutes per eye.

Is there any hospitalisation required for LASIK surgery?

There’s no hospitalisation required for LASIK. You just walk-in and walk-out of the centre.

Is LASIK covered under my health/medical insurance?

No, LASIK is not covered in any medical insurance because it is a cosmetic procedure. It’s a corrective surgery and not a medical treatment.

Does LASIK surgery hurt?

LASIK is a painless surgery because your surgeon will place anesthetic eye drops in your eyes prior to the surgery. You might feel a bit of pressure though. But that’s for a fraction of seconds only.

Do I need to stop wearing contact lenses prior to LASIK surgery?

Minimum 5 days prior to the surgery you’ll have to stop wearing your contact lenses.

How soon can I get back to gymming after LASIK surgery?

You may continue gymming after 10 days of LASIK surgery. It doesn’t apply any pressure on your eye but post surgery we advise to not to splash water in your eyes and then the sweat may get into your eyes and may cause irritation. So, we advise to avoid gymming for a few days but you may go for small walks.
