How To Treat Astigmatism

How To Treat Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common refractive error much like nearsightedness and farsightedness. Though many a times people misunderstand it to be some kind of eye disease or disorder. And, if it occurs early in life, it may even result in amblyopia. So, astigmatism can be defined as a condition in which the eye does not focus light evenly onto the retina that results into unclear vision.

Wikipedia states astigmatism as, “A type of refractive error in which the eye fails to focus light evenly on the retina, thereby causing a distorted or blurred vision at all distances.”

Causes

In people diagnosed with corneal astigmatism, their cornea is irregularly shaped instead of being round in shape. Whereas, in case of lenticular astigmatism, it is caused by the shape of the lens inside the eye.

Astigmatism also is classified as regular or irregular. Irregular astigmatism can result from an eye injury which could be caused due to scarring on the cornea, certain type of eye surgery, keratoconus, etc.
