What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the optic nerve of eye is damaged, causing permanent vision loss. It usually is associated with high Intraocular pressure (IOP). However, some people can experience optic nerve damage even if their eye pressure is normal. If left untreated, glaucoma can cause blindness.
What causes glaucoma?
The exact cause of glaucoma is not known. For some reason, the passages that allow fluid within your eye to drain become clogged or blocked. Fluid within your eye then builds up and increases pressure on the optic nerve which further causes damage to your nerve fibers and blood vessels resulting in vision loss. Also, use of certain medicines like steroids, antidepressants, sleeping pills, etc, may cause glaucoma in some cases. An injury, infection or tumor in or around the eye can cause the pressure to rise. In some families, however, the disease is hereditary. Let’s say, if anyone in the family has glaucoma then 30 percent chances are that it may be passed on to the children.
Will I go blind from glaucoma?
