Deciding Between Blade-Free Vs. Conventional LASIK

In any LASIK procedure, devoid of blade or bladeless, an ophthalmologist first creates a thin flap in the eye's clear surface, cornea. However, the difference lies in the fact that in a conventional LASIK technique, a surgeon uses a hand-held blade to create the corneal flap, whereas in a Femto LASIK procedure, the steel blade is replaced with a high precision laser which makes the procedure 100 percent blade-free, pain-free and stitchless. Besides, it results into faster wound healing and improves visual outcome too.

To know if you qualify for LASIK surgery, seek an appointment and check with your ophthalmologist. And if you are below 18 years, pregnant or lactating woman, diabetic or have a history of dry eyes, LASIK is not recommended for you.

The ICL or implantable collamer lens is an implantable lens that works with the natural lens of your eye to improve vision. It is a great alternative for patients who cannot have Lasik surgery either due to high prescription, thin corneas or dry eyes problem. Patients with astigmatism can also be candidates for this procedure.
Being small in size, ICL can be implanted easily. It is removable, can be worked beyond the limits of laser treatment and shows satisfactory results.
There are no serious problems encountered with ICL, however there can be certain risks or potential complications associated with it which includes halos, glare, double vision, slight infection, etc.
ICL is excellent way to get rid of glasses. Though it can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism, it tends to have certain limitations like ICL surgery is suited for patients with extreme refractive power. Besides, depending on one's power, glasses may still be required for sharpest vision, especially for night driving or other activities performed in low light, etc.
LASIK is a day care procedure and therefore, post surgery you are allowed to go home on the same day. Antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops are administered along with a temporary padding over the eyes so as to avoid any kind of eye infection and the whole procedure takes around 30 minutes. Visual recovery may vary from few hours to few days until it gets stabilised. However, you will be allowed to return to your normal activities within 2-3 days following surgery. Follow-up and aftercare visits are to be adhered strictly as per your surgeon's directions.
The Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) is recommended to patients who are not suitable for LASIK or have extreme nearsightedness/farsightedness/ astigmatism. These artificial lenses are very similar to external contact lenses in function with the only difference being that these are to be implanted inside the eye in addition to your natural lens.
At Sharp Sight (Group of Eye Hospitals), ICL procedure is performed by our team of experienced surgeons. An initial check-up will confirm your suitability, which is then followed by a series of eye tests and examinations. If one decides to go ahead with the treatment, the lenses will be made to the exact specifications. Prior to your ICL procedure, you will be advised to stop wearing your contact lenses and start pre-operative medication, that includes antibiotic drops. During the day of ICL implantation, local anesthetics will be used to numb the eye, followed by which the lens is inserted through a small incision. As a precautionary measure, the lenses are implanted one at a time, which means once the first eye has fully settled, the second eye receives its ICL.
The ICL procedure is well suited for individuals who are not considered to be ideal candidates for LASIK. This includes individuals who have
  • Extreme nearsightedness or farsightedness.
  • Thin corneas to have LASIK.
  • Older than 21 years with a stable refractive power.
  • Not pregnant/lactating woman.

Candidates with following conditions are considered ideal for iLASIK:

  • If you are 18 years or above.
  • Have had stable vision for the past one year.
  • Have corneas of adequate thickness and normal shape.
  • Have no systemic illnesses or collagen vascular disorders such as Rheumatoid Arthritis.
  • Are not pregnant or nursing.
Normally, majority of people meet the age and general health criteria for the iLASIK procedure. However, only your ophthalmologist will confirm if you are well-suited for the procedure after accessing your eyes. So, as you make up your mind to get rid of glasses, schedule your appointment with an experienced eye surgeon who specialises in LASIK.
With latest techniques and world-class equipments, LASIK eye surgery is considered to be one of the safest ways to get rid of glasses. Having said that, like any surgical procedure, LASIK surgery too can pose certain side effects that must be taken into consideration. For instance, during the first few days post LASIK, people may experience some of these side-effects:
  • Red spots on the white part of the eyes which becomes normal in 2 to 3 weeks.
  • Increased sensitivity to light, this lasts for the first 2-3 days.
  • Burning sensation in the eyes.
  • Dry eyes.
  • Decreased visual clarity in dim light.
However, these side effects are usually temporary and these eventually disappear as the eye heals.
Unlike the conventional LASIK, Femto Lasik procedure is 100 per cent bladefree, painless and stitchless. Since the Femtosecond laser is a high precision laser, therefore, corneal flaps are accurately made without the use of blades. Also, because the flaps are made of uniform thickness, this improves the accuracy of the LASIK procedure giving a better visual outcome.
A second, or enhancement procedure can usually be performed to provide additional correction, especially if objective of the surgery is not met during the first time. However, most people do not require additional surgery.
Patients normally prefer to have both eyes treated at one sitting, however, if the patient feels comfortable getting one eye treated at each session, this too can be done.
LASIK eye surgery offers multiple benefits to most people with refractive errors. This includes:
  • Clear vision without depending on glasses
  • Opens plethora of career options like pilots, air hostesses, actors, models, athletes, etc.
  • It offers better vision for recreational sports activity like playing golf, river rafting, swimming, etc.
  • One can enjoy and participate in activities like being on dance floor, etc.
Focusing problems of the eye are also called as refractive errors. These are usually corrected by use of glasses, contact lenses or through LASIK eye surgery. These refractive errors include :
  • Myopia or nearsightedness
  • Hypermetropia (Hyperopia) or farsightedness
  • Astigmatism or use cylindrical glasses
