Since early 1970’s different surgical procedures have been developed to improve the refractive error (spectacle power) of people and improve their vision without the dependence on spectacles.
Stop Hiding Behind Spectacles
With the advent of lasers for this surgical procedures a new era for eye care has unfolded. The excimer laser procedure along with the creation of a small corneal flap “LASIK” (laser assisted in situ kerotomeliusis) is an excellent painless and an accurate procedure for this purpose.
Millions of successful procedures have been performed world wide till date.
What is normal vision?
In a normal eye, the light rays enter through the cornea and are refocused again by the lens of the eye, forming a clear focus of a single point image on the retina (Fig.1). This image is then converted into nerve impulses and sent via the optic nerve to the brain.
In patients with spectacle power (refractive error) there is a defect in the way the light passes into the eye.the light rays do not bend(focus) properly into and instead of focusing on to the retina at a single point source they may:
Focus in front of the retina as in myopia or near sightedness (Fig 2.) when the near objects are clear than the distant ones.
Fig. 2 Myopia or Nearsightedness
Focus behind the retina as in hypermeteropia or farsightedness (Fig. 3) the distant objects being more clear as compared to near.
Fig. 3 Hyperopia or Farsightedness
Or even focus on two different points as in astigmatism (cylindrical power) (Fig. 4) when there is generalised blurred vision.
Fig. 4 Astigmastism
The refractive errors as above usually result from an abnormality in the shape of the cornea or due to an inadequate length of the eye itself.
Newer machines use a small spot of scanning laser beam (flying spot laser).
They have the capability of correcting various parts of the cornea in a different way at the same time.
The whole procedure can be used to custom design the shape of the cornea for a particular individual patient.
Eye Trackers
There are some fractional (saccadic) eye movements always, however small they may be. For the lasik procedure to be really precise it is important to detect these movement and incorporate them during application of the laser beam.
The laser radar tracking system developed by NASA’s “Strategic defense system” is used to detect this micro eye movements (thousands of readings are taken per second).
These movements are detected. The laser beam is then synchronized such that it can be locked on to a fixed point on the cornea irrespective of the eye movements.
Our centre is equipped with the above mentioned facilities with one of the worlds best and technologically most advanced state of the art machines.

After the Lasik Procedure?
The whole procedure is quick and usually lasts for 15 to 20 minutes. Since it is completely painless with minimal discomfort, you can leave after a short while and rest for the day.
The patient may resume normal daily activities in a day or two with minimal restrictions.
Most of patients report an immediate improvement of vision with a few minutes.
Complete clearing up of vision may take a day or two.
For some patient the vision may be slightly blurry and may fluctuate during the healing period.
This period depends on the power of glasses, degree of astigmatism and individual healing of the patients.
People with extreme high powers of glasses may end up with near complete correction, but some of them may require another procedure to achieve the desired results.
Are you eligible for Lasik?
If you are above 18 years of age and have healthy corneas and eyes with a stable vision for over one year. You are ideal for this surgery.
Some patients with some medical conditions, abnormally thin corneas and pregnant women may not be eligible for this procedure.
Some may be better candidates than others ,hence consultation and a detailed evaluation by the doctors at our center prior to the procedure is very important to determine the eligibility of the eye & the estimated benefits of the surgery.
You can have all your queries regarding the surgery answered at the center by our team of doctors and specially trained.
Do you wonder what life would be after lasik?
Wondering what life would be after lasik? Consider yourself to be compeletly free from ugly glasses or cumbersome contact lenses for ever. Experience the freedom from burden & restriction of glasses to a clear vision. It really can change the way you look at life.

Please call us for an appointment at our centre for your evaluation for the procedure and utilize the visit to seek answers to any queries or doubts that you may have.
If get my lasik done how long will the correcting effects last? The power corrected usually stabilizes over a period of few months. There are studies to prove that once stabilizes it is usually permanent and lasts forever.
How do I know if I’m a good “candidate” for laser vision correction? Your eligibility can be determined based on a comprehensive pre-operative examination of your eye and measuring your corneal thickness.
I’ve heard that some people need reading glasses after lasik even though they didn’t need them before. Is this true? They may need reading glasses, particularly if they are near 40 years of age and were relying, prior to surgery. They probably suffer from presbyopia, a condition lasik does not address.
How could lasik affect my night vision? Initially a few patients may find it hard to see in darkness, and see “halos” or glare with very bright light. In most cases, this condition is temporary, and will disappear as the eyes undergo a natural healing process. However, occasional patients (very high power) may continue to experience slight night vision glare.
